You know that scene in the movie Elf where Buddy rushes into the conference room twirling around and screaming, “I’m in love, I’m in love, and I don’t care who knows it!”? Well, that’s basically how I’m feeling about Teagan Hunter after finishing We Are the Stars which was nothing short of new adult perfection. The dialogue was smart and witty; the emotion was authentic; and investing in the characters was effortless.
While reading, I couldn’t stop thinking about how We Are the Stars reminded me of some of my favorite coming of age movies – the blossoming love of Say Anything mixed with the self-discovery of Empire Records. But Teagan puts her own fresh spin on these themes with the end result being a story that feels generationally relevant with the bonus of an added layer of depth.
With this novella, Teagan provided a reading experience that comes few and far between for me. I became wrapped up in the words, lost in the emotion, swept away by the beauty of the underlying message of a story that was laden with hope, love, and second chances. We Are the Stars is a blazing hot star on her path as an author and I have no doubt she’ll be adding many more as she continues her journey.
